Protect a PDF with a password online
Protect PDF locks a file with a password, so only people you trust can open it. Use it for invoices, bank statements, ID copies and any other file you send by email or chat. It is done in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.
How to use it
- Choose the PDF you want to lock.
- Type a password, then type it again to confirm.
- Press Protect PDF and download the locked copy.
What you get
- A copy of your PDF that asks for the password when it is opened.
- Standard 128-bit PDF encryption that works in Adobe Reader, Chrome, Edge, Firefox and phone PDF viewers.
- The pages and text stay exactly as they were. Only the lock is added.
- Private, with no upload and no account.
When to protect a PDF
- Invoices and statements sent to a customer or your accountant.
- ID and address proofs shared for KYC or a bank form.
- Contracts and quotes that only the other party should read.
Private by design
Everything happens inside your web browser. Your files and your password are not uploaded, there is no account to create, and nothing is stored after you close the tab. The tool is free, with no watermark and no daily limit.
Frequently asked questions
Is the PDF really encrypted?
Yes. The file is encrypted with standard 128-bit PDF encryption, so every PDF reader asks for the password before it opens the file.
Is my PDF or password uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is locked inside your browser. Neither the file nor the password leaves your device.
What if I forget the password?
It cannot be recovered. Keep the password somewhere safe, and keep an unprotected copy of the original if you may need it.
Can I remove the password later?
Yes. Open Unlock PDF, enter the password and download a copy without the password.
Does it work on a PDF that already has a password?
Not directly. Remove the old password with Unlock PDF first, then protect the copy with a new one.
